Let’s talk about food storage options

In the age of sustainability, plastic has become public enemy number one. Not only is it bad for the environment, but it can also leach harmful chemicals into your food. For those looking for plastic-free food storage options, there are a few very different options out there.  It can be tough to know which one is right for you, but there are a few things you can keep in mind to help you make your decision.

First, think about what kind of material you want your storage containers to be made from. Glass is a great choice. It’s durable and reusable.  But it can be heavy and it’s definitely breakable which is not good when there are pets or small children around.

If glass isn’t an option for you, stainless steel is another good choice. It’s also reusable and lightweight, but it’s important to note that it can scratch easily. And it can be bulky (a problem if you don’t have lots of cupboard and drawer space in your kitchen) and expensive.

Bamboo is also becoming more popular, and is a good option for those who want something sustainable and plastic-free. This is a great alternative to plastic plates and cutlery, however maybe not so fantastic for actual food storage. It’s important to make sure that it’s properly sealed to prevent mould growth.

Which brings us to beeswax wraps …..now this is a smart way to store food!  They are a fairly new phenomenon, but are becoming increasingly popular due to their many benefits over other forms of food storage. Let’s take a closer look at why they are so good……

  • They are made from natural products

100% plastic free.  Waxiwraps are made of cotton cloth that has been coated in a beeswax blend with natural oils and resin.

  • They prevent the growth of bacteria, hence keeping your food fresh for longer

Beeswax makes the cloth moisture-resistant and allows it to breathe, which helps prevents the growth of bacteria.  Not only that but beeswax itself is antibacterial and it also has antifungal properties which can prevent the growth of yeast and fungi – which is why it is so perfect for reusable food wraps.   Other forms of food storage, such as plastic wrap and aluminium foil, do not allow food to breathe and can lead to bacteria growth.

  • They are non-toxic

Because they are totally natural, beeswax wraps don’t release any toxins into your food……so much healthier for everyone in the family.

  • They are easy to use

Depending on what you are wrapping, you can fold them, mould them or twist them, or even make origami-style pouches with them!    Whichever style you use, wraps should neatly mould around your food using the warmth of your hands to self-seal, again and again and again.

  • They are lightweight, versatile and easy to look after – and store

Waxiwraps come in five different sizes, and we’ve even got three different sizes of Waxibags too.  Simply wrap your food to store in the fridge and after use, rinse it in cool water with a splash of mild detergent (or wipe it down with a cloth), leave it to dry and then pop it back in your drawer.   It couldn’t be any easier.

  • They are reusable, which makes them environmentally friendly

They are extremely durable and will last for a very long time, at least 12 months, even when used daily.  And even when they start losing their tight seal, you can recoat them at home using a beeswax refresher bar.  Alternatively, if it’s still winter, simply twist them up and use them as firelighters.  Otherwise, they are biodegradable so you can simply add them to your compost bin.

So, what are you waiting for? Ditch the plastic and switch to more sustainable options for storing your food.  Beeswax wraps offer many benefits over the alternatives on offer: they are affordable, easy to use and to store, and most importantly, reusable and eco-friendly. Not only will you be helping the environment by using these wraps instead of plastics, but you’ll also be keeping your food fresher for longer. But ultimately the best food storage option is the one that suits your needs and stops you reaching for the plastic.  Ready to make the switch?
